Celebrating
Twin Baptisms
by: Angela Mendoza (UP Ministry) |
The
Campus Storm campaign ended with many beginnings.
It indicated the beginning of a stronger, wiser, more
bonded campus ministry. Faith increased, friendships
were built, and hearts were transformed. More so,
the last day of the campaign marked the beginning
of two new spiritual journeys. Pamela Amantiad and
John Michael Castro were both baptized last June 29.
Pam
and Mike are both third year students in the University
of the Philippines in Diliman. Mike was first invited
to a Soul Talk while Pam first joined the outreach
program in HOPE Worldwide Philippines - Payatas. The
series of Bible studies that followed eventually inspired
them to be baptized.
Welcoming
them into the family of believers was indeed very
encouraging for the campus ministry. It was a special
day for Pam and Mike. After all, baptisms are always
steeped with meaning.
More
Than Words
The
Bible is the best-selling book of all time. Its wisdom
is timeless. Its stories are considered literary champions.
The Bible is a good book, and MUCH more. It is God's
book.
Some
of us may be boggled by questions about the Bible's
existence. There is much confusion about the Bible
such as translation, interpretation, and canonization.
All of these concerns were demystified last June 13,
2008 when our church teaching committee head Atty.
Rommel Casis gave a talk on the Bible's history. Questions
were answered, and facts were laid.
The
talk was another activity during the Campus Storm
campaign wherein disciples (and their friends, of
course) got the chance to take a deeper look at the
Bible. During the activity, everyone was free to ask
questions, voice out opinions, and clarify speculations.
This
is a great time to live in. With all the technology,
scientific breakthroughs, and archaeological findings,
little room for doubt is left. Ultimately, clarity
increases faith. However, the best way to search for
answers is still by making the choice to follow the
Bible. Nothing tops first hand experience and personal
conviction when it comes to searching for the Truth.
Crossing
Over to God's Side
People
know the cross. People see it. People hear about it.
But how much of it is actually understood?
Last
June 19, disciples from the North Campus Ministry,
together with some friends, trooped to Room 116 in
the UP Alumni Center for the much awaited Cross Night.
Dr. Andre Publico gave life to the cross by animating
verses from the Gospel of Mark. He expounded on each
verse, shared his insights, and left questions to
his listeners.
The facts were presented. Jesus gave up his life to
give us life. The only man who committed no sin was
flogged, stabbed, and nailed to a cross. Bloody sweat
and tears trickled down his face, and yet people mocked
him, they laughed at his wounds, celebrated his suffering.
We
all know this too well. But the cross is not just
a story, it also leaves a choice. A person is free
to decide whether he or she will live worldly or spiritually,
to believe in things of men, or in things of God.
The choice is even simplified when placed in this
perspective: our soul is the only thing we have that's
eternal. Crossing over to God's side is the message
of the cross. Where we will be 10,000 years from now
will be determined by the decision we make today.
